Meet Paul & Janet

Paul & Janet Kolimas

Innkeepers since July 2018

Paul and Janet are the fourth owners of Cloran Mansion since it became a bed and breakfast. They live on the property, as Illinois law requires, and they keep the house welcoming but never stuffy: there when you need them, out of the way when you don’t. Ask Paul at breakfast why the mansion was very nearly never built.

Guest guide

Galena, the way the innkeepers see it

The mansion sits about 1.5 miles from Main Street, on 1.5 acres with a screened gazebo, a 1,600-gallon pond with waterfall, gardens, a swing for two and a patio fire pit. Here is how to fill your days.

History & sights

  • FreeMain Street’s blocks of specialty shops, about 1.5 miles down Franklin. The walk is hilly, so most guests drive part way, park on Franklin and walk the rest.
  • FreeUlysses S. Grant Home, the Civil War general’s Galena residence.
  • PaidGalena & U.S. Grant Museum for the town’s lead-mining past.
  • PaidNational Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium, about 20 minutes away in Dubuque.

Outdoors

  • PaidKayak or canoe the peaceful Galena River.
  • PaidChestnut Mountain skiing, about 20 minutes from the mansion in season.
  • FreeWalking and bike trails through some of the prettiest scenery in the Midwest.
  • FreeThe mansion’s own grounds: gazebo, waterfall pond, gardens and fire pit.

Evenings & wine

  • PaidThe P.T. Murphy Magic Show, a local favorite.
  • PaidGhost tours through one of Illinois’ most storied towns.
  • PaidWine tasting rooms, pubs and coffee shops around Main Street.
  • FreeThe town’s full events calendar lives at visitgalena.org; check days and seasons before you go.

Food & the misses

  • Galena’s Main Street has dining for many palates, from casual to fine. Reserve ahead on busy weekends.
  • January to March is the quiet season: fewer crowds on Main Street, and some places keep shorter hours, so call ahead.
  • The building that once held John Cloran’s dry-goods store is now the Great American Popcorn Company, a fun stop with history.

Getting around

  • Galena is hilly. The mansion has plenty of free parking on its long driveway, so driving is easy.
  • In winter, watch for ice on the bluff roads. If a winter storm warning is issued on your travel day, same-day cancellation carries no fees.
  • Galena sits in the driftless hills of northwest Illinois; Dubuque, Iowa is about 20 minutes away.

Staying safe

  • Stick to lit streets on evening walks back from Main Street; the hills get dark fast.
  • Lock valuables and keep the car tidy in any tourist town.
  • Summer storms can move quickly over the river bluffs; check the forecast before a kayak trip.
  • Traveling with limited mobility? Antonio’s Cottage has no entrance steps and a walk-in shower, and Sara’s Room is on the first floor.
